For several years, the Balkan lynx has struggled to survive as deforestation ruined its habitat and poachers targeted the elusive mountain cat together with the animals it relies on for food.
But now, experts have uncovered yet another strong enemy likely introducing tension on the endangered species — wild canines.
Feral pet dogs have been a prolonged but rising difficulty throughout extensive stretches of the Balkans, with significant packs stirring community health fears in metropolitan areas and harming livestock in rural communities.
The difficulty has been specifically acute in North Macedonia, wherever an estimated 6,000 wild puppies are considered to populate the capital Skopje alone. There is no official facts on the variety of feral pet dogs nationwide.
The persistent dilemma is operating headfirst into the years-extensive conservation battle to help save the Balkan lynx, viewed as one of the region’s most endangered animals.
Industry experts estimate that there are close to forty of these solitary cats remaining in their habitat, which handles mountainous swaths of Albania, Kosovo, and North Macedonia.
