Governor Lilia “Nanay” Pineda has reminded the public not to take dog bites lightly.

She warned that even a minor bite can lead to rabies.

The governor addressed the 1,027 patients who attended the medical mission of the Alagang Nanay Preventive Health Care Program at the Lubao Gym over the weekend.

She stressed that prompt medical attention is crucial to prevent rabies infection.

Pineda’s reminder comes as the Department of Health (DOH) reported that Central Luzon recorded the highest number of rabies cases in the country during the first five months of 2025.

The DOH said that region, which includes Aurora, Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac, and Zambales, logged 21 cases from January 1 to May 17.

Nationwide, the DOH tallied 124 rabies cases during the period.

The figure however represents a 32 percent drop from the 183 cases recorded in the same period last year, according to the DOH.

The health agency said that following Central Luzon are Zamboanga Peninsula with 15 cases and Calabarzon with 12.
