‘It was Christmas Eve babe, in the drunk tank”. The iconic opening line of Fairytale of New York conjures up starkly contrasting images. Christmas Eve, a time for family, friends, good food and good times; versus police cells, where the inhabitants are in the depths of despair.

We all want to stop and enjoy the festive season, particularly Christmas Eve and day, but Shane MacGowan’s words highlight how the world doesn’t stop turning. Police, paramedics, fire fighters etc are all still working, and the big man in the red suit has a busy night ahead as well.
