Andrea Gibson was a celebrated poet both in spoken word and written formats. Their work explored gender identity, politics, activism, and queerness. In 2021, they were diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and they passed away on July 14, 2025.

An announcement made by their wife, Megan Falley, says, “Andrea Gibson died in their home (in Boulder, Colorado) surrounded by their wife, Meg, four ex-girlfriends, their mother and father, dozens of friends, and their three beloved dogs.”

Earlier this year, Come See Me in the Good Light premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. The documentary follows Andrea Gibson and fellow poet Megan Falley’s relationship after Gibson is diagnosed with terminal cancer. It includes an original song by Gibson, Sara Bareilles, and Brandi Carlile. The documentary will air in the fall on Apple TV+.

Andrea Gibson was the Colorado Poet Laureate, and some of their most well-known works are Lord of the Butterflies, You Better Be Lightning, and Take Me With You. You can also see them perform their slam poetry on YouTube.
